How to Select Drapery Rings

Although drapery rings are not required for the installation of some drapery panels, they are the most popular component used to complete drapery installations as they add an additional design element to the overall aesthetic.

Drapery rings can be made of metal, wood, resin and can be plain or have designs which coordinate with the look of the rest of the hardware.

There are two types of commonly used rings:

  • Rings with clips - The ring clips have “pinch-clips” that grip along the top of the drapery panels, securing them in place. Rings with clips are only recommended for use with light to medium weight drapery panels; heavyweight panels tend to pop the clips open and become hard to manage. We don’t need a constant nuisance.

Keep in mind that choosing the right size ring for your pole or rod is very important to allow effortless movement of your drapery panels. Another factor to consider is how many rings you need or want?

CWF PRO TIPS: Ring size selection guidelines.

  • Choose a drapery ring with an inside diameter ½ inch larger than the diameter of the pole or rod. For example, if you have a 1-inch diameter rod, the appropriate ring will have an inside diameter of 1 ½ inches.  A ring with a smaller inside diameter will make it difficult to move the drapery along the rod.

  • Conversely, be careful not to choose a ring that is too large for your rod as they will look unsightly and most likely ruin the look of your drapery installation. Proportion is everything!
