Common Types of Curved Windows

Bay Window

A bay window is a window space projecting outward from the main walls of a building and forming a bay in a room. Bay window is a generic term for all protruding window constructions, regardless of height. The most common inside angles are 90, 135 and 150 degrees, though triangular bays formed of two windows set at 120 degrees may be found.

Bay windows became a hugely popular feature of residential Victorian architecture in the British Isles from about the 1870s and hold a continuous appeal up to this day. They are used to increase the flow of natural light into a building, thereby also making a room appear larger, and to provide views of the outside which would be unavailable with an ordinary flat window.

Bow Window

A bow window is a curved bay window. Bow windows are designed to create space by projecting beyond the exterior wall of a building, and to provide a wider view of the garden or street outside and typically combine four or more casement windows, which join together to form an arch.

Bow windows first appeared in the eighteenth century in the United Kingdom, (and in the Federal period in the United States).

Arch Window

An arch window (also known as a radius window) creates a dramatic effect in both contemporary and traditional homes. An arch window can be tall like a casement window or wide like an awning window. In traditional homes, arch windows can be used to create a Victorian-like effect.

Turret Window

A turret window is very similar to the bow window with the key difference being the angle of the curve. Turrets are traditionally more circular where the bow window generally has a more wide open curve. Commonly seen durring the Victorian era, turrets, with their many windows, have been a fashionable way to bring extra light and air into a house, as well as a showplace for displaying beautiful pieces of furniture.

Twist Hammered Curtain Rod

Wow, take a look at this twist curtain rod with the hammered effect. I think you can agree that this is a great combination. Just like the standard twist iron rod it is hollow in construction. Can be curved or bent to fit almost any window shape.

Rope Curtain Rod

One of our favorite curtain rods is the rope curtain rod. With the tighter twisted look than the standard twist rod the details really stand out with this rod. You can really make great use of color in the finishes on this rope rod. The rope design shows the contrast of color by allowing the finish to sit down in the grooves of the rope. Can be curved or bent to fit almost any shape window.
