Hi,
I am encouraged by Dave's response to other posts so I decided to ask my doubts about curtan rods. I have bought the curtains for my formal dining, living, study and MBR and would appreciate answers to some of my questions. I had an interior decoraator come in and make those recommendations.

Dining Room:
Window Outer width: 101 inches
Kirsch 12" pole, fluted/mahogany                      #5600-12G/083
Kirsch brackets(1 pair)                                     #5603EG-083
Kirsch hidden support brackets (2 1/2"-3 1/2" return) #5618
Kirsch finials (1 pair)                                        #5621G/083
Kirsch rings                                                     #5602EG/083

Living Room:
Window 1 Outer Width: 101 inches
-- Same as above --

Windows 2 Outer width: 79 inches
Kirsch 8' wood pole, fluted/mahogany(1)           #5600-8G/083
Kirsch brackets(1 pair)                                     #5603EG-083
Kirsch hidden support brackets (2 1/2"-3 1/2" return) #5618
Kirsch finials (1 pair)                                        #5621G/083
Kirsch rings                                                     #5602EG/083

Study:
2 windows - same dimensions - outer width 79 inches
I would like to be able to close and open these windows frequently.

"summit" fluted traverse rod sets (2)
   antique brass finish                       #51546C

Master Bedroom:

First Rod for Curtain:
Kirsch 12" pole, fluted/mahogany (1)         #5600-12G/083
Kirsch brackets 6" return (2 pair, 2 side + 2 center) #5614G/083
Kirsch finials (1 pair)                                #5621G/083
Kirsch rings (5 packs)                               #5602G/083

Second rod for sheer behind the first rod:
I would like to be able to close and open sheer.
traverse rod (l)                                   #3087

Here are my questions:
1. I have Mahogany color furniture in my living, dining and MDR. My curtain in living and dining is gold and brown vertical stripes in silk with lining. All this hardware is in Mahogany color an dI was wondering if there is anything similar in Gold or history gold at least for living and dining room.

2. For Master Bedroom, I have a  big three panel window, I have two panels of sheer that cover 11/2 windows each and I have three panels for Silk curtain that I plan to tie individually in the middle using tassels. So i will have two sheer in the back that need to open from the middle and three curtains in the front. Both my curtains and sheeer are of the same height. I was thinking of going with double bracket with two rods initially (I read that you can make it) but then I don't know how I would be able to open the sheers with 2 brackets in the middle? Can I support all this with just one middle bracket? I am concerned that it will be too heavy. The interior decorator suggeted, traveerse rod in the back and curtain rod in the front. Won't I need to have the traverse rod below the brackets? Do you think it will look all right? I am not so sure considering that the bracket is almost 6" at the base.

3. The last one is about the rid size. All these are 1 3/8". All my rooms are 9 feet with crown moulding so I would be mounting rods at 8 feet. The rooms are good size living (16X12), dining (16 X 12), MBR (19X15). Would you suggest a 2" rod for that instead of 1 3/8"? I know it's very subjective but any guidance will help.

I was almost ready to make the purchase but thought to check with you first. Sorry for the long post.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,
WOW, you get the record for the longest post!  No problem though, I enjoy the challenge and respect your concerns to get this right.  My first thought when reading your post was these are pretty large windows and are going to be used in a formal setting (living and dining rooms) why not go to a 2" wood pole.  My opinion about 1 3/8" Wood is it is very small.  Drapery hardware should really help show off your beautiful drapes.  Yes, 2" does cost more but the change in the look is dramatic.

Here are the answers to your questions:

1. If you have mahogany furniture in the room it will look good using mahogany hardware for the curtains.  You could go to the color "Anodized Bronze" but I prefer to see more of a contrast between the panels and hardware to make everything pop out.

2. The master bedroom is a tough one.  You want to use wood hardware in this but Kirsch does not make a double wood bracket.  The best way to tackle this window, since the sheers and curtains are the same height is to use a double wood bracket (from another vendor, which we have) or attach a inside mount wood socket to the 6" projection brackets.  This way you will have every thing the same height.  If you need me to explain the bracket thing to you in more detail just give me a call.  For this to work you will definitely needs to use a 2" diameter wood pole to go the 6 foot span between brackets.  1 3/8" will flex in the middle if it goes more than 5 feet.  Your decorator suggested using the travers rod in the back and I am not fond of that idea.  Here is why!  I like continuity when using hardware.  The white traverse rod will be visible at all times behind the wood poles.  If this does not bother you than it is not an issue.  It is just something that I view as a quick fix and won't have your best interests.

3.  The rod size I addressed above.  Each size will look good since Kirsch make a good product. I am just partial to the larger diameters.

On another note, have you had an chance to look at the LJB wood hardware we have on our site?  This is very similar to the Kirsch but the cost is significantly less.  It is all hand finished here in the us (Kirsch is finished in China) and is very high quality.  It might be worth taking a look.  You could possibly get the 2" from LJB for the same price as the 1 3/8" from Kirsch.  Here is a link.

Thanks Dave. This is very helpful information. I do like the idea of going wtih LJB. It does not make much difference with 1 3/8 but with 2" rod it's singificant!
I do have some follow-up questions for you so I would just call you to discuss. BTW, one thing I did not understand is the shipping cost for 12 ' pole from Kirsch is just $75 and it's $225 with LJB. That just might be the deal killer here.

Again, thank you very much!

It can be painful, unless you split the pole and use a connector screw.  The reason for the shipping difference from Kirsch to LJB is because I sell about 5 times the amount of Kirsch and they are a much larger company, therefore they are able to get better shipping rates.
