De-Cluttering and Organizing for the New Year

De-Cluttering and Organizing for the New Year

Have you ever realized that now is the time to get organized, to sort through your stuff and get rid of what you don’t want and put what you want to keep in an appropriate place without much anguish? But then suddenly you hear that little voice whispering “I can do this later, maybe tomorrow”. That voice can convince you that you can get organized anytime you want. It persuades you that the window of cleaning opportunity is always open. No. Sorry, it does not work that way. Stuff happens that makes it impossible to concentrate on the organizing process. Those things may go on for a long time. Day-to-day living eats up our time and energy. Many times we end up stuffing things in drawers, stashing them under the bed, or even throwing some out, just to keep our heads above water. We assure ourselves that we’ll get a grip on it very soon, and yet soon never seems to get here.

Organizing our stuff is a passion of mine. I consider cleaning out my junk drawer fun. I love labels and have been known to put my books and colored pencils in rainbow order. Laugh if you must, but over the years I’ve developed a simple routine for trimming down and crafting order in my home. How? It’s relatively easy when you stop hyper-ventilating. What exactly is clutter anyway? Unfortunately it is a sign of procrastination. It is the blender you’ve been meaning to fix, the overdue library books and the piles of paperwork and junk mail waiting to be sorted. De-cluttering requires decision making, some that you may have been putting off forever.
So what’s first? Clutter clearing is physically and emotionally fatiguing, so now is the time to gear up and fuel your motivation. Here are a few questions you might like to ponder over a cup of tea before getting started: How will clearing the clutter from my home make life easier? What is the most challenging area to work on? In three words, how do I want my home to feel when this is done?

Let’s begin by making a quick sweep of the whole house, picking up the obvious clutter. You know what these are; items going to the trash or to recycling, the things you have been meaning to return to your neighbor, and other things you know can’t stand to look at. This first step is meant to be easy and fast. Turn on some music, gather a few bags and set the timer for 15 minutes. You will be amazed at how much better you will feel after a short clutter-busting spree! If you find yourself saying “I might need some of this one day…!” be honest. Do you really need twenty ratty old towels, or will a couple of nice fluffy ones do? When you pare down to what is really loved, needed, and actually used, the cupboards and shelves are not going to be horrifying to open every day.

Collections can be wonderful additions to your home, but they usually take on a life of their own and end up getting out of control. By narrowing the focus of the collection, you will be able to create a more interesting and cohesive display. Find one location where all of the pieces can sit together for maximum impact. Perhaps a slim shelf made with a slim cornice board held up by Kirsch Alexandre Brackets will fit the bill.
Take another deep breath now. Go back to your cup of tea. This has been a great start on the road to de-cluttering! Let’s meet again tomorrow.

A Stylish Option for Your Windows.

Window valances are a stylish window treatment option, but it’s important to find one that fits your style. They are also a cost effective way to add interest to an otherwise plain and boring window. Valances come in an abundance of styles such as balloon valances, swag valances and box pleat valances. Adding a window valance as part of your window treatment opens up a wealth of opportunities for expressing your creativity. A valance can add elegance and sophistication to a window, or it can add whimsy and artistic flair to the entire room. You can make your own at home for a fraction of the cost of new and they will give your windows that custom-made look.

There are times when you just want to do something out of the ordinary when decorating a room. You can add a wooden valance to your window and paint it or enhance it in a most unusual way. One example would be to attach dried grass to it for an island themed room. Or, you could paint it in a unique manner. Adhering collectibles such as buttons, shells, or various other objects to the wooden valance would certainly personalize the valance.

Things you will need:
Measuring tape
Fabric
Thread
Curtain hardware from Kirsch Drapery Hardware

Measure the width of the window to determine how much fabric you will need. How long you want the valance to hang from the top? 10 inches is usually recommended. Add 2 inches at the top for the rod pocket and 1 inch to the bottom and sides for the hem. For a box pleated valance, you will need to add an additional 2 inches for each pleat.
Turn the top of the fabric under 1 1/2 inches and pin along the fold line. Sew along the folded edge to create a 1 1/2-inch rod pocket. Create a 1 inch hem at the bottom and sides. If you are adding trim to the bottom of the valance, now is the time to sew it on as well.
Use a power drill to hang the hardware for the rod. Kirsch’s LockSeam curtain rods are the strongest and most versatile rods on the market today. They are enclosed on the back side to provide added strength and durability by preventing sagging, twisting and bending with out  exposed edges to snag the  curtains. Lockseam curtain rods are available in single, double, extended and even triple curtain rod configurations.
The rod should be installed on the outside of the window frame for best results. Thread the rod through the pocket at the top of the valance and hang it on the window. Done!

Tint Your Windows in One Day

Looking to install your own  window tinting? Look no further than Gila window films. Gila has provided window film products designed for the do it yourself window film consumer since 1978. Gila has created a static cling solar window film that is easy to apply, durable and an affordable alternative to professional installation. Made from vinyl and plastic, Gila Window Film reflects the majority of the sun’s heat coming through your windows. Not only that, it can do the opposite: in winter, it helps your house retain heat. In addition, Gila Window Film will block exterior glare, an especially important factor if you live on a busy street, and it will reduce any fading of carpeting, fabrics or anything else affected by UV rays.

Platinum All-Season Heat Control Film LES 361 comes in a package that contains a roll of film that is 3 feet by 15 feet. In its rolled-up state, Gila Window Film looks reflective and silvery. Don’t panic; your house will not look like a skyscraper in an office park. Once on the window, the film has just a slight tint–no mirror effect at all.

Gila Window Film is not difficult to apply. As long as you have a large, clean, flat working surface and a long straightedge (maybe a drywall square), you’re good to go. Cut the film slightly larger than the glass. Remember that the film is slippery and does take some patience (Save the coffee for after you’re done). Guess what – there is no sticky adhesive to worry about. Spray the solution, put down the film, readjust if necessary, cut the excess, and you are ready for that cup of coffee. If you see a mistake even 3-5 days later you can pull it up and reapply it.
Continental Window Fashions will add beauty and elegance to your window. Make your dreams come true with Gila Window Film.
