It’s Party Time!

It’s still holiday time, in fact, next week is New Year’s Eve! The weather report in the south is projecting a balmy evening, the guest list is planned, the freezer is stocked – there’s only one problem; no party space. The dining room is microscopic, and the family room is home to every plastic toy known to man. And we all know that once armed with adult beverages, even the most careful of guests can cause serious damage resulting in broken glass, hurt feelings or ruined furniture. A solution- take the party outside to the carport! How? Following are a few simple, cost-effective ways to restyle a parking space into a party space. By introducing pattern, color, draperies and lightweight furniture, your carport will never tell anyone that it was once dressed in oily leaks and muddy tire marks.

To begin creating the illusion that a car was never housed within its walls, start from the ground up.Paint the  flooring with  contrasting colors to create a graphic pattern mimicking a rug-like appearance will hide the floor’s dirty past. Don’t get carried away, stripes are the way to go as they are simple and quick to create.

Wash down the surface with a hose and let it air dry, then paint the entire space a solid base color using a roller. Once it is dry to the touch, use painters’ tape to mark the stripes. Start with the accent color, reposition the tape as necessary, and then paint your final color. Wait at least 4 hours before stepping on the newly painted space.

Proper seating is key to keeping your guests comfortable. Sturdy, lightweight chairs made of metal or plastic can be found at discount stores and yard sales. Don’t worry about the color because you’re going to paint them. The cushions aren’t a problem either, because they are easily changed. Lightly sand the existing finish off the chairs. Add a coat of spray primer, then a coat of high-gloss spray paint. Remove the existing cushions with a screwdriver, remove the old fabric, and use a staple gun to attach the new fabric.
The entire neighborhood isn’t invited? No problem! Attach drapery hardware to outdoor walls or beams using flanges and metal screws. Attach the curtains with rings because you will want to easily remove them after the party when you put your car back. To give the drapery panels a more custom-made look, it’s all about the fold. Once the panels are all attached, run your fingers through the back and front of the fabric, creating a fold from the top all the way to the bottom.

Every party space has a great light fixture. To ground your temporary outdoor dining space without having to fuss with electricity hang paper lanterns in contrasting colors; with some hook eyes and string. Add battery operated tea lights inside instead of true candles. Bring in a table draped in a coordinating cloth; add food, music and friends, and the celebration is on!

A Pretty Detail for Lovely Windows…

If you’ve longed for a romantic country inn look for your interiors, try the simple freshness of white lace curtains. With paired with jewel toned holiday ornaments nestled on the window sill, they are simple, traditional and beautiful.
White lace curtains are appropriate in nearly every room in the house. They are a fresh alternative to heavy drapes and mini-blinds. Hang them alone where you do not need nighttime privacy or light control, use them over simple window shades or blinds, or hang them under fabric panels that will draw closed at night.
The fullness of lace curtains should be a minimum of 1 1/2 to 3 times the width of the window. In other words, if your window is 24″ wide, the curtain panel should be between 36″ and 72″ wide. In general, the more sheer the fabric, the more fullness may be needed; additional fullness will often give more window coverage.
While lace has associations with country cottage styles, it carries formal roots from drawing rooms and works well in traditional or antique settings.

Following are a few suggestions to decorate with lace curtains that are sure to create the preferred effect:

*Add decorative tiebacks to each side of window frames to increase the window treatment options. Select something whimsical, such as an animal or something traditional, such as a knob or disk.
*Integrate the lace curtains with the room’s furnishings by adding a valance. Select one that picks up a primary color from the room’s furnishings

*Arrange well-established potted palm near the lace curtains to make the most of the filtered light and bring more nature into the decorating scheme. Tropical plants such as bromeliads and African violets do well in filtered light. It’s also a great place for your Christmas tree. From the street the lights will shine with a filtered glow.
*When hanging lace curtains or sheers use a translucent rod to keep the harshness of the metal showing. The Graber Collection offers a 2 1/2 Inch Clear / Frost Dauphine Rods that will hold the curtains securely, yet not stand out through the lace.

It’s All About Tension

Today’s lesson is all about tension rods! Spring tension rods are a great way to hang shower curtains or other light window curtains in tight spots. They require very little assembly and no hardware at all to install. They won’t hold very heavy drapes, but are great in kitchens for cafe curtains, and bathrooms for shower curtains.

A tension rod is an adjustable rod made with springs on the inside and a plastic or metal circular bar on the outside and is generally adjustable within a small margin, without causing any damage to the wall or window frame where it is installed. A tension rod is easy for almost anyone to install and use, without needing to have any building or installation know-how. Tension rods however, are only recommended for light weight curtains and limited to a width of 84 inches. Why is there an 84″ limitation? Tension curtain rods are designed to hold very little weight and do not have a center bracket for support. Longer spans and heavier weights will cause the tension rod to either bow or sag in the middle or fall down all together because they cannot support the weight .Graber Spring Tension Rods offered by Continental Window Fashions are your best bet when it comes to purchasing tension rods.

Usually, a tension rod features a long bar in the middle with two flat rubber ends. The rubber ends are designed to be non-slip, to prevent the bar from sliding off the wall or window. How do they work? A tension rod uses a spring and a screw to create tension between the rod and the wall, making them fully adjustable. The concept is basic. Two pieces of metal or plastic fit inside each other. A coil spring is placed inside the rod and pushes one piece against the other. A screw is used to keep the placement of the coil in the right area so the tension will remain.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive and easy solution for hanging curtains, consider tension curtain rods. Since they save you from putting holes in your walls, they are a great solution for hanging curtains in a rental property. Tension rods can work in place of almost any curtain rod. Tension rods are considerably lighter than traditional curtain rods and they are made of two pieces, so the fabric must be light enough to keep the rod from bowing in the middle .Sheer window treatments work well with these types of rods when standing in place for curtain rods.
Tension rods offer the best stability inside a window frame where the two ends can be tightened to create tension against the supporting walls. Used this way, the rods can create a variety of styles. One of the most common kitchen treatments requires placement of the tension rod at the middle of the window. Tiers are then created to hang from the rod to the bottom of the window sill. In combination with a valance or swag at the top, you have created cafe curtains. Valances can also be hung by a tension rod mounted inside the window frame of a door.
