Stay Away From My Window!

Keeping your privacy shielded from prying eyes, inadvertent glances and dangerous predators is easier than you think by adding simple window treatments to your windows. How much someone will be able to see through your windows will be a matter of light, angle and distance. Go outside and take a look back from different distances, different angles and under different lighting conditions. The view through your window treatment is going to look different each time. You can choose from a variety of different window treatments to best combat your specific privacy issues.

During the day, the inside of your house will be darker than the outdoors, making it difficult to see into the house from outside. No one wants neighbors or strangers peeking into their windows. Valuable belongings are better protected by adequate window privacy. At night, artificial light illuminates the interior of your house. People will be able to see in easier due to the contrast between the dark outdoors and the light indoors

You will want to let in some light, but block the part of the window where you are losing the most privacy. Choose window treatments based on how much light comes in and how much shines out of your house. During the day, the inside of the house will be darker than the outdoors, making it difficult to see into the house from outside. A sheer treatment will be enough to diffuse most direct views, and you can eliminate the display with darker and denser fabric for curtains, shades or blinds.

Blinds are one of the most commonly used forms of discrete window treatments. They are inexpensive and come in almost any color and material. Metal, plastic and wood blinds are popular choices. Blinds install inside or outside of the window frame, and can be pulled up out of the way or opened to allow sunlight in when privacy is not an issue.

Shades will add privacy to any room. They pull down easily, and roll up just as quickly to allow sunlight into the room or to let you to look out the window. Shades come in many designs and colors and can match nearly every decorating style and theme. Valances and swags will block the top portion of the window, and café curtains or closed shutters will cover the bottom view.

Privacy window treatments also prevent potential burglars from checking out of items of value inside your home. Privacy treatments come in all forms–cloth, wood, metal, vinyl and almost any other material imaginable. You can create privacy by layering curtains. Try a drape hung over sheers, hanging over a shade.

Curtains or Drapes?

The words “curtains” and “drapes” are used almost interchangeably these days. In professional vernacular, drapes are usually long, heavy window coverings that are lined, while curtains are lighter window coverings that provide some privacy, and filter the sunlight . But to most people, drapes and curtains are the same thing.

Originally, drapes and curtains did not refer to the treatments themselves but rather to the people who crafted them. Drapers were merchants who sold fabrics and materials for making the window treatments, which in turn were purchased by curtain makers who went from house to house to cut, drape and hang the fabric. The word curtain comes from the Latin “cortina,”  a partial veil or covering.

When choosing curtains, it doesn’t matter whether the window treatments are described as curtains or drapes, but rather do they fit your particular need. If your main purpose in purchasing curtains is to add privacy, look for heavy curtains with a lining that will completely cover the window necessary. If you want curtains to block sunlight or nighttime light, choose curtains that are lined with blackout material. If you like the look of curtains but don’t want to lose your room’s natural light, sheer or very light curtains can be a good pick.

If chosen wisely, curtains make a room. When it comes to window treatments, it’s a matter of fabric and color, lining and length.

Fabric is an important part of choosing curtains. The material will dictate how well your curtains function and hold up over time, and how they will hang. If the fabric is too heavy, the curtains may not fold crisply when drawn; if they are too light they may not fall well at all. Velvet, linen, silk, and faux silk are the best choices to use for window treatments since they tend to hang the best. Faux silk is the most durable and in a sunny room it will not deteriorate as quickly as real silk. Sunlight will fade most fabrics over time. If the room gets a lot of light, it’s better to avoid bright colors, since they tend to fade faster. But, if you like to change out your rooms often, there’s less concerned with fading. Try going with neutral colors, since they’re less likely to fade and more likely to blend into a room’s decor.

Once you’ve selected the color and the fabric of your draperies, decide how high above the window you want them to begin. Hanging panels higher than the window will give a sense of height to the room. Hang curtains about six inches above the window frame, but for a dramatic look, go even higher. Measure from the top of the window to the floor. Add the height above the frame where the curtain will actually hang from. If you want the curtain to puddle on the floor, add another two or three inches to the length. For a crisper look, the panel should fall flush with the floor.

Custom window treatments offer many benefits. The dimensions can be customized to your window size and create a tailored look just like a perfectly fitted suit. Custom panels come in endless design options, from material to header style. With these options though, comes a considerable price difference from off-the-shelf curtain panels. Don’t Let Plaster Keep your Windows from Dressing Properly

The curtain rod is become a fundamental part of window treatments. In different designs, different finishes and with interchangeable finials that add character to the rod they are hard to pass up. As a matter of fact, ONA Wrought Iron Drapery Hardware has some very pretty and very unique curtain rods and finials. Do not let a hollow plaster wall deter you from hanging your choice of curtain rod, as hollow wall screw anchors are available to hang even the heaviest items.
Hanging drapery hardware in plaster can be tricky because of the composition of plaster walls. Plaster is a hard surface with a configuration similar to concrete or plaster of Paris. This top finish is applied over a system of wood or metal lathing. Plaster in an older home may be brittle and will often crumble. Before purchasing anchors consider the weight of the draperies you plan to hang to determine the type of anchor or fastener used.
If you plan to hang light weight curtains:
Pre-Drill a hole into the plaster that is slightly smaller in diameter than the mounting screws you will be using. Use a hand screwdriver rather than a motorized drill driver to insert the screw into the plaster. Over tightening the screw may pull it out of the wall. If the screw pulls does come out because you’re overzealous, a plastic anchor installed in the screw hole will solve the problem.
Medium Weight Drapery Rods:
Plastic anchors should be used for medium-weight rods. Mark the wall and then pre-drill the holes slightly smaller than the plastic anchor you will use. Gently tap the anchor into the whole r and use the screws that came with the anchors to install the bracket. Again, over tightening the anchor may end up in it pulling out of the wall. Tighten just enough for the anchor to expand and snugly fit in to the plaster wall.
Heavy Weight Drapery Rods:
For heavy rods toggle bolts are going to be needed to hold it in place. Check the package for the drill bit size recommended to drill pre-marked holes in the plaster wall. Insert the bolts through the drapery rod bracket, then screw on the winged nut .Gently screw the nut up the shaft of the bolt. The winged nut will open on the behind the wall increasing the amount of area to support the weight of the drapery rod. If the winged nuts fall out, they will drop down into the wall necessitating a new winged nut to be installed.

Living Small But Creatively

Living small forces you to live creatively. If you live, sleep, study and spend time with friends all in one place, with so much going on, it can get messy and mixed up quickly. What you need is a simple system that keeps your different zones separated — an extra wall or two to mark each space within your place. Vesta Hardware is the answer. Most Vesta hardware items are imported from overseas bringing the modern European drapery look here to the United States. Vesta offers a vast array of modern drapery hardware products including the Techno Track Collection, high end traverse drapery rod system.

Hanging curtains around the bed in a studio apartment partitions off the sleeping area with a soft flow of fabric that separates the bed from the other living areas without the bulk and inflexibility of dividers, screens and other hard barriers.

For today’s project you will need:

Curtain Track System

Drill

Plaster/ceiling anchor

awl

Curtains

Measure the length of the ceiling area on which you want to run your curtains, using a measuring tape. Draw a faint line representing this area with a pencil.
Hold the track pieces up to the ceiling along the path you’ve marked. Make marks onto the wall, through the screw holes in the tracks.

Poke small holes into the ceiling with your awl where you made your screw marks. Hold your hardware pieces back up, lined up against the holes. Drill your threaded drywall anchors into the small holes, attaching the tracks to the ceiling.
Insert the hooks included in your track kit onto the tracks, according to package instructions.

When considering the number of curtain panels to buy, think about tripling the width. This trick provides an abundance of gathers to make a translucent curtain more private, or a heavier curtain more sumptuous. The less gathers there are, the more see-through a translucent curtain appears.

Done!  Privacy, creativity, and splendor all in one afternoon.
A few things to consider:

**Make sure you aren’t leaving even the smallest space between track pieces: the closer together the pieces are the smoother the curtains will open and close.
**You will probably need two people to finish the job. Invite a friend, celebrate afterward.
**Once the track is in place, hang the curtains at regular, even intervals.

Stark, Elegant Style with Bamboo Curtain Rods

Bamboo is one of the most Eco-friendly building materials there is—it’s sturdy and solid, yet it grows extremely fast and is therefore rapidly renewable. It has a stark, elegant look that will likely blend into the decor of your home. Menagerie Bamboo Curtain Rods and Drapery Hardware is a bamboo drapery hardware collection offering many styles to coordinate with your individual needs. Please note that all of the bamboo poles are independently created by Mother Nature. No two poles are identical. The organic pits, discolorations, and pole “curves” are natural enhancements to the bamboo designs, and are not considered defects. All Menagerie Bamboo Drapery Hardware accessories are cast in resin and stained to match the real bamboo curtain rods.
Bring the island flavor of bamboo to your home or beach house with Menagerie bamboo drapery rods and accessories including bamboo curtain rings, curtain rods and brackets. Menagerie has a 2″ bamboo drapery hardware collection offering many styles for you to integrate into your home.
Curtain rods are a great place to integrate this wood into your home. Bamboo curtain rods come in a variety of colors and are visually lighter than most wood and iron rods creating a laid-back appeal that’s perfect not only for a coastal home but for any room where you’re craving an injection of seaside style. Pair a bamboo rod with a set of light sheers. The color and weight of the rod keeps the sheers from feeling like they’re floating away, while at the same time the sheer fabric makes the rods seem less heavy. One of the best things about bamboo is that it naturally compliments a pattern. Geometric prints or bold prints work well with bamboo because the simplicity of rods doesn’t allow it to compete.

Bamboo, a Noble and Useful Element

Bamboo, one of the ‘four gentlemen’ of the plant world, plays an important role in traditional Chinese culture. Ancient lore has endowed bamboo with integrity and elegance. Just as bamboo is hollow-hearted, the poet Bai Juyi (772-826) said man should open his heart to accept anything of benefit and never fill it with arrogance or prejudice. Imagine having something as upright and perseverant in your home.
